Spotlight: Meet Ben — The Wildlings' Master of the Brush

Updated: May 8

Every club has that one painter. The one whose work stops you mid-conversation. The one you quietly point at when someone new walks in and asks what standard people paint to around here. At West Allotment Wildlings, that painter is Ben — known online as Benvolio Miniatures — and his work genuinely has to be seen to be believed.

Ben is one of those rare hobbyists who excels at every aspect of the game. He's a committed and competitive player, a regular face at the club, and someone who brings genuine enthusiasm and knowledge to whatever game is on the table. But it's when he picks up a brush that things get truly special.

A Range That Speaks for Itself

What strikes you immediately about Ben's portfolio is the sheer breadth of it. He isn't a one-trick painter — he moves between systems, scales, and styles with the kind of confidence that only comes from years of dedicated practice and a genuine love of the craft.

C'Tan: The spectral C'Tan figure in purples, blues and acid green

Take his C'Tan — a haunting, otherworldly miniature from the Warhammer 40,000 Necron range, painted in a palette of deep purples, cold blues, and an eerie acid green that bleeds through the tattered, pixel-like trailing robes. The blending on this piece is extraordinary: smooth transitions from near-black shadows up through icy highlights, with just enough colour variance to give the impression of something ancient, powerful, and barely contained. It's the kind of piece that makes you look twice, then a third time.

Then contrast that with his T'au Crisis Suits — a squad of white and black battlesuit infantry painted to a crisp, technical standard that would look at home in a studio showcase. The non-metallic accents, the clean edge work on the armour panels, the subtle weathering on the sandy bases — every detail is considered and executed with precision. These aren't just painted to be played with. They're painted to be admired.

The Lumineth Collection

If there's one body of work that shows what Ben is truly capable of at scale, it's his Lumineth Realm-Lords army — and it is breathtaking.

The colour scheme he's chosen — pristine ivory white, rich royal blue, and warm gold — is demanding even on a single model. Keeping it clean, consistent, and bright across an entire army, from infantry to cavalry to centrepiece models, is a serious technical achievement. Every shield in the spearman unit carries a unique hand-painted runic symbol in blue. The freehand work on banners and pennants is confident and sharp.

The army's centrepiece — a stunning Lumineth archer poised mid-draw atop a spiralling vortex of wind and ribbon — is perhaps the finest single model in Ben's collection. Shot against a plain dark background, it commands attention entirely on its own merits. The flowing ribbons transition from ivory through warm cream to pale blue in perfectly smooth gradients. The figure itself balances warm skin tones against cool white armour and vivid blue cloth, with gold and copper details catching the light exactly where they should. It is, simply put, a show-quality piece.

The cavalry are equally impressive — five riders mounted on pale, armoured creatures with deep plum-coloured limbs, each one beautifully differentiated. The pennants and gold detailing are consistent and sharp across the whole unit, a real testament to Ben's ability to maintain quality at scale.

And seeing it all together — the full Lumineth spearhead arrayed across a display — gives you the full picture of what Ben has achieved. Spearmen with individually hand-painted shields, cavalry, the towering centrepiece archer — this is a cohesive, beautifully realised army that would turn heads at any event in the country.

Commission Work

Ben takes commissions, and if you're looking to have your own collection brought to life at this standard, he's the person to speak to. Ben will take on commissions from single figure to combat patrol level for the tabletop, he brings the same level of care and quality to every project.

A Wildling Through and Through

What makes Ben such a valued part of the West Allotment Wildlings isn't just the painting — it's the attitude that comes with it. He's generous with his knowledge, enthusiastic about the hobby in all its forms, and someone who genuinely raises the bar for everyone around him just by being part of the club.
