Into the Dark Water: Six New Players, One Unforgettable Dungeon Crawler Friday

Last Friday evening, the Dungeon Crawler session at West Allotment Wildlings took an exciting turn — we welcomed a brand new group of six players to the table for a game of Dark Water. It was a proper first adventure together — new faces, new dice, and a very atmospheric dungeon crawler that had everyone gripped from the opening setup.

What is Dark Water?
Dark Water is a dungeon crawler that drops players into a grim, waterlogged underworld filled with monsters, traps, and tense exploration. Players take on the roles of adventurers delving deeper into corrupted subterranean passages, managing resources, facing enemies, and working together to survive whatever lurks around every corner. It's a game that rewards cooperation, tactical thinking, and a healthy tolerance for suspense.
The tile-laying mechanics reveal the dungeon piece by piece as players explore, keeping that sense of dread and discovery alive throughout. With threats ranging from shambling horrors to environmental hazards, no two games play out quite the same — and that unpredictability is a huge part of the appeal.

Six Players, One Table, Zero Prior Experience
What made this session especially brilliant was that all six players were brand new to the group — and for many of them, it was their first time sitting down at a dungeon crawler. There's something genuinely special about that moment when a group of strangers starts to gel around a shared game, and that's exactly what happened on Friday.
After a quick rules rundown and setup, the group were off — choosing their characters, dividing responsibilities, and immediately falling into the rhythms that make dungeon crawlers so enjoyable. There were cautious adventurers who wanted to check every shadow, and bold ones sprinting headfirst into darkened corridors. The table dynamics were fantastic.

How the Game Unfolded
The early stages of Dark Water were deceptively calm — tiles were placed, corridors opened up, and everyone started to feel the weight of the dungeon bearing down. Then the encounters began. The group faced their first enemy engagement and quickly discovered that Dark Water doesn't pull its punches. Coordination became critical as the party spread out to cover more ground, only to find that isolation in a dungeon is rarely a good strategy.
The mid-game saw some genuinely heroic moments — clutch dice rolls, sharp tactical plays, and the kind of table laughter that only comes when things nearly go very badly wrong. The waterlogged aesthetic of the game really lends itself to the Dungeon Crawler Friday format: dramatic without being overwhelming, and accessible without being shallow.
By the end of the session, the group had navigated the dungeon, survived some tense encounters, and had the kind of shared experience that turns strangers into regulars. That's what Dungeon Crawler Friday is all about.

Why You Should Come to Dungeon Crawler Friday
