Watch on the Tyne: Our Bolt Action Narrative Event is Coming — Book Now!

December 1944. Hitler's Germany launches a desperate gamble — a massive surprise offensive through the frozen forests of the Ardennes, hoping to split the Allied lines, capture the vital port of Antwerp, and force a negotiated peace. What followed became one of the largest and bloodiest battles fought by the United States Army in World War II: the Battle of the Bulge.

On Sunday 26th April, West Allotment Wildlings brings that conflict to the tabletop. Watch on the Tyne is our Bolt Action narrative event — a variable points day of WWII wargaming set against the backdrop of the Ardennes offensive, with players commanding German, US, or British forces across a series of story-driven games.

The Historical Setting: Battle of the Bulge

The Ardennes Offensive — codenamed Operation Wacht am Rhein by the Germans — began on 16th December 1944. Three German armies smashed into a lightly defended section of the Allied front, catching the Americans completely by surprise. The attack created a dramatic bulge in Allied lines — hence the name that history would give it.

What followed was six weeks of brutal winter fighting through snow-covered forests, frozen foxholes, and besieged towns. The defence of Bastogne by the 101st Airborne. The desperate armoured relief of Patton's Third Army. British and American forces fighting shoulder to shoulder to close the bulge and push the Germans back. It's one of the most dramatic and tactically rich settings in all of WWII wargaming — and it's perfect for a narrative event.

What Is Bolt Action?

Bolt Action is the world's most popular WWII tabletop miniature wargame, produced by Warlord Games. Players command platoon-scale forces from the major Allied and Axis nations across iconic theatres of the Second World War — from the beaches of Normandy to the Pacific islands, North Africa to the Eastern Front.

The game is built around a brilliantly tense order dice activation system — coloured dice drawn randomly from a bag determine which units activate and when, creating the fog of war and split-second decisions that defined real battlefield command. Third Edition, released in 2024, is widely praised as the most polished and accessible version of the rules yet, making it a fantastic entry point for new players while giving veterans more tactical depth than ever.

What Is a Variable Points Narrative Event?

Unlike a straight competitive tournament, a narrative event puts storytelling at the heart of the day. Variable points means your army isn't locked to a rigid points limit — scenarios drive the action, with the forces available shifting to reflect the historical situation. One game you might be defending a vital crossroads with whatever you have available; the next you're part of a relief column fighting through to break a siege.

This format is perfect for players of all experience levels. If you're new to Bolt Action, the narrative framework takes the pressure off optimised list-building and lets you focus on the story unfolding across the table. If you're a seasoned player, it's a chance to dust off units you'd never take in a competitive setting and give them their moment in the spotlight.

Choose Your Side

Tickets are available for three forces: German, US, and UK. Each side has its own story to tell in the Ardennes. Will you hold the line with the embattled American defenders, lead the German armoured spearhead in a desperate bid to reach the Meuse, or drive forward with the British forces racing to close the gap? The choice is yours — but choose quickly, as places are limited.
